A major step toward modernizing cancer diagnostics in the Philippines is underway as AstraZeneca Philippines and Hi-Precision Diagnostics Center, Inc. join forces to introduce advanced digital and computational pathology technologies that could improve the accuracy, accessibility, and efficiency of cancer diagnosis.

The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), seeks to strengthen the country’s diagnostic capabilities by integrating digital technology, artificial intelligence, and specialized medical expertise into existing pathology services.

For many Filipino cancer patients, receiving an accurate diagnosis can be challenging, particularly in communities far from specialized medical facilities. Delays in diagnostic results may affect treatment decisions, making faster access to reliable pathology services essential.

Through digital pathology, traditional glass slides containing patient tissue samples are converted into high-resolution digital images. These images can be securely examined, shared, and reviewed by medical specialists, potentially reducing geographical barriers to expert consultations.

Meanwhile, computational pathology uses validated software and artificial intelligence to identify patterns in tissue samples, assisting pathologists in making informed clinical assessments. These technologies support medical professionals rather than replace their expertise.

Advancing Patient-Centered Healthcare

AstraZeneca Philippines Country President Lotis Ramin emphasized the importance of accessible and dependable diagnostic services in improving cancer care.

“Every patient deserves timely, accurate diagnostics that can help guide the right care,” Ramin said, highlighting the collaboration’s goal of creating a more connected and equitable diagnostic ecosystem.

The initiative will initially focus on Hi-Precision Diagnostics, with opportunities to support wider adoption across appropriate healthcare facilities.

Key priorities include upgrading digital infrastructure, improving laboratory workflows, strengthening quality assurance procedures, and providing specialized training for healthcare professionals.

The collaboration will also emphasize secure data management, responsible technology implementation, and continuous monitoring to maintain diagnostic reliability.

Hi-Precision Diagnostics Vice President for Medical Services Vannessa Ongsue said the partnership reflects the organization’s commitment to delivering accurate and accessible diagnostic services while preparing its workforce for technological advancements.

Shaping the Future of Cancer Diagnostics

Beyond technological upgrades, the collaboration aims to establish a sustainable framework for precision medicine, enabling healthcare teams to make treatment decisions based on individual disease characteristics.

By combining medical expertise with responsible digital innovation, AstraZeneca and Hi-Precision hope to improve access to specialist reviews, strengthen diagnostic efficiency, and support better healthcare outcomes.

The partnership represents a promising development toward a more connected, technology-enabled, and patient-focused cancer care system for Filipinos.
