Protecting Students Beyond the Classroom

As Filipino families prepare for another school year, Pioneer Insurance is reminding parents that back-to-school readiness goes beyond buying school supplies and preparing class schedules. With the opening of classes coinciding with Dengue Awareness Month, the company is encouraging families to include health and accident protection in their preparations for the months ahead.

The return of face-to-face classes means children will once again spend more time in classrooms, playgrounds, sports facilities, and public spaces. While these activities contribute to learning and development, they can also increase exposure to health risks such as dengue and accidents that may occur during daily school routines.

According to Jo-I Kapunan, Accident and Health Insurance Head of Pioneer Insurance, parents can continue to safeguard their children even when they are away from home by ensuring they have financial protection against unexpected situations.

“As children return to school, they spend more time outside the home, increasing their exposure to mosquitoes and possible accidents. While parents cannot always be physically present to protect their children, they can still show care by ensuring they have a financial safety net when unexpected health or accident risks happen,” Kapunan said.

Health experts continue to emphasize vigilance against dengue, particularly during the rainy season when mosquito populations tend to increase. Data previously reported by the Department of Health showed that dengue cases nationwide exceeded 15,000 between July and August 2025, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by the disease.

Beyond health concerns, a dengue diagnosis can place additional financial pressure on families. Medical consultations, laboratory tests, medications, and recovery periods can result in unexpected expenses that may affect household budgets and educational plans.

To help address these challenges, Pioneer Insurance offers MediCash Dengue Insurance, an affordable protection plan that provides P10,000 in medical cash assistance upon diagnosis of dengue. The coverage is valid for 12 months and is available for individuals aged 14 days old to 70 years old. Notably, hospitalization is not required to file a claim, and benefits may be received alongside PhilHealth and HMO coverage.

The company also provides other protection products, including Ooopsie! Personal Accident Insurance and MediCash Leptospirosis, which help cover risks associated with school activities, sports participation, commuting, and other everyday situations.

“Through affordable coverages, together, we can focus more on care and recovery instead of worrying about where to get support during difficult moments,” Kapunan added.

By promoting awareness, preparedness, and accessible insurance solutions, Pioneer Insurance hopes to help Filipino families face the school year with greater confidence and peace of mind, knowing they have added support when unexpected challenges arise.
