As the demand for digital connectivity continues to rise, Globe Telecom is rethinking not just how it builds its network—but how it powers it. In line with the global observance of Earth Day, the company is stepping up its commitment to sustainability by turning to locally sourced renewable energy for key operations.
In a recent move, Globe partnered with First Gen Corporation to supply electricity from geothermal and hydroelectric sources. This shift will see facilities in Mindanao powered by geothermal energy, while a major site in Caloocan draws from hydropower. By tapping into indigenous energy sources, Globe reduces its reliance on imported fuel—an important step in managing rising global energy costs and ensuring long-term operational stability.
Geothermal energy, known for its reliability, provides a constant and uninterrupted power supply, making it ideal for energy-intensive network infrastructure. When paired with hydropower, it creates a more balanced and resilient energy mix capable of supporting round-the-clock operations. This is particularly crucial as telecommunications services remain essential to everyday life, from communication and business to education and emergency response.
The transition was made possible through government-backed programs such as the Retail Competition and Open Access and the Green Energy Option Program. These initiatives allow large-scale energy users to directly source renewable power, encouraging a broader shift toward sustainability across industries.
Beyond sourcing cleaner energy, Globe continues to implement efficiency measures across its operations. For sites that still rely on conventional fuel—especially in remote areas—the company uses solutions like Dynamic Load Management to optimize generator performance and reduce fuel consumption. These efforts reflect a balanced approach: improving sustainability while maintaining service reliability.
Earlier this year, Globe also joined Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lighting across its facilities, reinforcing its advocacy for energy conservation.
As it expands its infrastructure, Globe’s direction is clear—powering connectivity in a way that supports both people and the planet. By integrating renewable energy into its operations, the company is not only strengthening its network but also contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for the Philippines.
