Frames That Travel Beyond Time

In Bali, where culture and creativity constantly intersect, a new chapter in global photography is taking shape. FOTO Bali Festival 2026 returns for its second edition with a broader vision—one that connects artists, ideas, and perspectives from around the world through the power of images. Hosted at Nuanu Creative City from June 3 to July 12, the festival transforms the island into a meeting ground for contemporary photography.

This year’s edition began with an overwhelming response, drawing nearly 700 submissions from over 80 countries. From this global pool, only 36 artists were selected—a testament to both the festival’s growing reputation and the competitive nature of its curatorial process. Representing 24 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania, the chosen artists reflect a rich diversity of voices, practices, and visual languages.

At the heart of the festival is the theme Afterimage, a concept that invites viewers to look beyond the surface of a photograph. Rather than capturing a moment as something fixed or complete, the works explore how images linger—how they shape memory, identity, and perception long after the shutter clicks. Some artists draw from deeply personal narratives, while others examine broader histories and shared experiences, creating a layered dialogue between the individual and the collective.

Festival Director Kelsang Dolma emphasizes that the open call plays a crucial role in shaping this exchange. By allowing both emerging and established artists to participate based on the strength of their work, the festival creates a space where boundaries—whether geographical or generational—begin to dissolve. The inclusion of multiple curators further deepens this approach, offering varied perspectives that enrich how the theme is interpreted and presented.

Curators Kurniadi Widodo and Putu Sridiniari highlight the diversity within the selected works. From documentary storytelling to conceptual and experimental forms, the projects demonstrate how contemporary photography continues to evolve. Yet despite their differences, they share a common thread: an awareness of how images persist, carrying traces of meaning that influence how we understand both past and present.

The festival also reflects Indonesia’s growing role in the global creative landscape. Supported by Wonderful Indonesia, the initiative underscores how art can serve as a bridge between cultures. Local participation remains an essential part of this exchange, with eight Indonesian artists contributing perspectives rooted in place while engaging in a wider international conversation.

As visitors move through the exhibition spaces, they encounter more than photographs—they experience stories that unfold over time. Each frame becomes a point of connection, linking distant geographies and shared human experiences. In this way, FOTO Bali Festival 2026 becomes more than an event; it is an ongoing dialogue, where images do not simply document the world, but continue to shape how it is remembered.
