A Lifetime of Leadership and Legacy

The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) has honored SM Investments Chairman Emeritus Jose T. Sio with the distinguished title of Honorary Life Member—an accolade reserved for exemplary leaders whose service has shaped and elevated the accounting profession. For PICPA, the recognition is more than a tribute; it is a celebration of a lifetime dedicated to excellence, discipline, and nation-building.

For over two decades, Mr. Sio has been a steadfast pillar of the accounting community, known for championing integrity and continuous professional growth. PICPA cited his “continued, dedicated service” and his “outstanding accomplishments and significant contributions to the advancement of the profession,” qualities that have long made him one of the country’s most respected financial leaders.

In accepting the honor, Mr. Sio expressed deep gratitude to his fellow CPAs. He emphasized how accountancy serves as the backbone of trust in business, shaping transparency, investor confidence, and long-term stability. “I am privileged to be part of organizations, like the SM Group, that view the field as a crucial part of the company’s growth journey,” he shared.

Mr. Sio’s path to leadership is rooted in humble beginnings. Born and raised in Iloilo, he completed his Commerce degree major in Accounting at the University of San Agustin before earning his MBA from New York University. His career trajectory later positioned him at the heart of the SM Group’s expansion. As Chief Finance Officer beginning in 1990, and eventually as Chairman of the Board in 2017, he guided SM through transformative milestones—including its 2005 initial public offering, which stood as the largest IPO in Philippine history for 15 years.

Throughout his career, distinguished institutions have honored Mr. Sio’s achievements. He received the prestigious Accountancy Centenary Award of Excellence in 2023 and Parangal San Mateo in 2022, among numerous accolades recognizing his leadership as one of Asia’s foremost CFOs.

Today, alongside his role as Chairman Emeritus, he continues to lend his expertise as a director, adviser, and trustee across major corporations and educational institutions. His legacy—marked by discipline, vision, and service—continues to inspire generations of Filipino accountants and business leaders.
