A New Chapter Unfolds: Inside the Reimagined PICC

When the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) first opened in 1976, it became a landmark of modern Filipino architecture—an embodiment of national pride, artistic vision, and global ambition. Nearly five decades later, the iconic structure enters a new era. After a complex-wide renovation, the PICC reopens not merely restored, but reimagined for the future, marrying the genius of National Artist for Architecture Leandro V. Locsin with the evolving needs of a rapidly modernizing world.

The revitalization marks a critical milestone as the Philippines prepares to host the ASEAN Summit and as the PICC approaches its 50th anniversary in 2026. Across its sprawling complex—already named a National Cultural Treasure—the enhancements are both respectful of its Brutalist DNA and forward-thinking in functionality, reflecting a harmonious balance between heritage and innovation. The result is a venue that stands ready to welcome the world with renewed purpose, technological sophistication, and a timeless sense of Filipino identity.

Honoring a Master’s Vision While Building for Tomorrow

Throughout the renovation, the guiding principle was clear: preserve the essence of Locsin while elevating the experience for the modern MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry. This philosophy is evident the moment one approaches the Delegation Building, which once again achieves Locsin’s illusion of “floating volumes.” The front lawn has been restored to its original 1976 landscape design, offering a lush welcome that hints at the meticulous work within.

Inside, the Main Lobby shines with newfound brilliance. Its iconic array of 3,068 droplights—long a symbol of PICC’s grandeur—has been carefully restored, while the ceiling now glows with hand-painted metallic tones. Marble floors gleam anew, and concrete walls, cleaned with precision laser technology, reveal textures that reflect the era of their creation. The Delegation Lounge, set to the right of the lobby, has been transformed into a serene enclave designed for comfort, privacy, and VVIP-level security.

Conference rooms on the upper floors have been refreshed with contemporary elements that retain the PICC’s architectural character, integrating modern furnishings, improved acoustics, and updated layouts to support high-level discussions. Even the 5th-floor offices have been redesigned to provide an efficient workspace that meets the demands of today’s event professionals.

Modernization Rooted in Cultural Significance

Across the complex, every detail tells a story. The Secretariat Building—in many ways the intellectual engine of the PICC—has seen its latticewood meeting rooms fully restored, their high ceilings preserved and enhanced with new audio-visual systems. These improvements make the spaces ideal for hybrid meetings, multi-session conventions, and digital-forward events.

The Plenary and Reception Halls, often the heart of major gatherings, have been thoughtfully upgraded. Vast LED screens, superior audio systems, and customizable lighting seamlessly integrate with Locsin’s original designs. In the Plenary Hall, restored wood panels and refurbished seating echo its original elegance. Meanwhile, the Reception Hall—with its thousands of shimmering globule chandeliers—stands ready to host banquets, ceremonies, and milestone celebrations with renewed splendor.

In the Courtyard, art takes center stage. Redesigned as an open-air gallery, the space showcases sculptures donated by APEC member economies, anchored by Arturo Luz’s monumental Anito. Restored pebble wash flooring, an infinity waterfall, ambient lighting, and a new 30-speaker audio system transform the area into a breathtaking venue for outdoor receptions and cultural performances.

Even the signage system has been refreshed. New brass wayfinding elements complement the interiors, ensuring efficient movement throughout the complex. High-speed Wi-Fi now blankets the property, supporting the digital demands of international events.

PICC as a Living Museum

Beyond its role as a premier event venue, the PICC stands as the country’s most visited National Cultural Treasure. Its halls now showcase a curated selection of over a hundred artworks from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas collection. From Jose Joya’s Pagdiriwang to masterpieces by Botong Francisco, H.R. Ocampo, Ang Kiukok, and Abdulmari Imao, the PICC invites guests not only to convene—but to experience the depth of Filipino artistry.

A Proud Symbol of Filipino Excellence

Now open for bookings, the reimagined PICC stands ready to welcome global leaders, innovators, artists, and communities. Its transformation signals more than a renovation—it marks the reaffirmation of a national icon. As the PICC approaches its golden year, it emerges as a world-class landmark that honors its past, embraces the present, and looks confidently toward a future filled with possibilities.
