A new wave of dreams took flight as the SM Foundation officially welcomed 900 college freshmen scholars during a heartfelt ceremony at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. These bright young individuals now join a growing family of changemakers empowered by one of the country’s most prominent scholarship programs.

In attendance were key members of the SM Group, including SM Engineering Design and Development Corp. (SMEDD) President Hans “Chico” Sy Jr., SM Investments Executive Director Harley Sy, SM Foundation Executive Director Debbie Sy, and Scholarship Program Head Carmen Linda Atayde, among others. They were joined by past scholars and SM executives in a show of unity and support for the new batch of students.

A Commitment Beyond Financial Support

More than just a financial grant, the SM College Scholarship offers comprehensive assistance. It covers full tuition, provides monthly stipends, and opens the doors to invaluable experiences—like leadership assemblies, part-time work, internships, and future employment opportunities across the SM Group.

Addressing the scholars, Atayde emphasized that the scholarship is both a reward and a responsibility:

This is not just support. It’s a vote of confidence. You’ve already shown your determination to succeed—and now we are walking with you every step of the way.”

Rooted in Legacy, Driven by Purpose

Launched in 1993 by the late Henry Sy Sr., the program was born from a simple yet powerful belief: education can transform lives. Over three decades later, it continues to grow—having already supported over 6,000 students from different parts of the Philippines.

From humble beginnings to professional success, many SM Scholar alumni have gone on to hold key roles across various industries. Their stories continue to inspire the current batch of students, just as they were once inspired themselves.

Wisdom Shared, Hope Renewed

During the event, a special panel discussion brought together SM leaders and past scholars, including SM Retail’s Leny Hernandez and SM Investments AVP-IT Jennilyn Mendoza. They shared personal stories of growth, answered questions, and offered heartfelt advice to the new scholars eager to carve out their own paths.

As the ceremony concluded, the sense of hope and purpose among the scholars was unmistakable. Armed with support, opportunity, and a belief in their potential, the 900 new SM scholars are now ready to shape their futures—and uplift others along the way.
