SM Retail, the retail arm of SM Investments Corporation, has been honored with the Privacy Management Program Award by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) during the recent National Data Privacy Conference in Parañaque City. The award recognizes organizations that demonstrate exemplary data privacy practices, proactive risk management, and effective accountability systems aligned with the Data Privacy Act of 2012.
SM Retail’s recognition highlights its structured, company-wide approach to safeguarding personal information and promoting a culture of privacy. The company was lauded for embedding Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in each business unit, conducting extensive internal training, and integrating privacy protocols into its daily operations. This comprehensive effort ensures that both employees and customers benefit from strong data protection policies that go beyond compliance.

“We’re deeply honored by this recognition from the NPC. It reflects the hard work and dedication of the entire SM Group,” said Honeylin Castolo, Vice President of SM Retail. “Effective privacy management requires more than policies—it demands leadership commitment, practical and relatable employee training, active privacy champions, and a system that empowers our teams to make security-conscious decisions every day.”
A core pillar of SM Retail’s Privacy Management Program is its Data Privacy Awareness training, which complements its ongoing cybersecurity initiatives. By equipping employees with the knowledge and skills to recognize and address potential risks, the program creates safer digital and physical shopping environments for millions of customers nationwide.
Castolo also credited the success of the initiative to the leadership of SM Retail’s Data Privacy Compliance Team, headed by Leyson N. San Juan, the company’s Data Protection Officer, along with the collaborative support of the various SM business units.
Beyond recognition, the program is closely tied to SM’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments, demonstrating that data privacy is not just about regulation—it is a strategic focus that strengthens the company’s long-term value and consumer trust.
“By embedding privacy at the heart of our operations, we aim to lead by example in the retail sector and build lasting trust with our customers,” Castolo added.
SM Retail was also named a finalist for the NPC Seal of Registration Award, while Leyson N. San Juan was recognized as a finalist for Data Protection Officer of the Year, further cementing the company’s leadership in responsible data management.
The awards were presented during Privacy Awareness Week (PAW), an annual initiative spearheaded by the NPC to promote data protection across the Philippines.
