The SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila was the epicenter of musical euphoria this May 2025, as two unforgettable nights brought fans to their feet and emotions to a high. On May 8, enigmatic J-Pop star Ado set the stage ablaze with her highly anticipated HIBANA World Tour. Just 24 hours later, the vibes flipped from dramatic to nostalgic as the Playback Music Festival delivered a wave of 2000s emo and pop-punk energy, making it a weekend to remember.

Ado’s Fiery Philippine Debut
In a dazzling mix of mystery and melody, Japanese pop phenom Ado made her long-awaited live debut in the Philippines. Famous for concealing her face but never her feelings, Ado transformed the MOA Arena into a theatrical dreamscape—her soaring vocals and dynamic stage presence proving that identity is more than appearance.

Opening beneath a giant suspended cage, the symbolism was hard to miss: freedom, raw expression, and an artist breaking barriers. With every song, Ado ignited the crowd, delivering a performance that felt less like a concert and more like a cinematic journey through sound and soul. In a rare moment of openness, she addressed the roaring crowd: “Your happiness is my happiness,” she said, sparking cheers and heartfelt applause.

Playback Festival: The Emo Revival We Didn’t Know We Needed
If Ado lit the fire, Playback Music Festival fanned the flames with a full-on blast of nostalgia. Emo and pop-rock fans, many dressed in throwback fashion—black eyeliner, skinny jeans, and all—descended on the Arena on May 9 to relive their teenage soundtrack.

Secondhand Serenade kicked off the night with their timeless heartache anthem “Fall for You,” followed by The Click Five, who gave the crowd a euphoric boost with “Just the Girl” and a surprise twist: a cover of Chappell Roan’s viral hit “Hot to Go.” The night peaked as Boys Like Girls brought the house down with “2>1,” leaving thousands swaying, singing, and remembering exactly why this music mattered then—and still does now.

Where Music Lives
From the hauntingly emotional to the explosively nostalgic, the SM MOA Arena proved once again why it remains the country’s top venue for world-class music experiences. Whether it’s the arrival of a J-Pop icon or the return of beloved 2000s rock bands, the Arena continues to be where memories are made and music lives loud.

Special thanks to Ovation Productions for introducing Ado to Filipino fans, and to Super Awesome Productions Inc. for resurrecting the golden era of emo with another edition of Playback Music Festival.
