Foundations of Faith: Building Sacred Spaces for Every Filipino

In a fast-changing world, where lifestyles are shaped by speed and convenience, the Felicidad T. Sy Foundation (FTSFI) stands as a quiet yet steady force, nurturing the spiritual core of Filipino life. Established in 2008 to honor the deep Catholic devotion of its namesake, the foundation has gone beyond simply building spaces for worship—it has been restoring the heartbeat of communities.

Filipino Catholics comfortably attend the Holy Mass at the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Chapel in SM Makati.

At the heart of its mission is a belief that faith should remain close and accessible, no matter how busy modern life becomes. Through partnerships with local dioceses, the foundation has built and maintained chapels in key SM Malls across the country, offering peaceful sanctuaries amid bustling commercial centers. These include the Chapel of the Eucharistic Lord at SM Megamall, San Pedro Calungsod Chapel in SM Aura, and Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Chapels in SM Makati, North EDSA, and Grand Central. These chapels provide space not only for regular masses and quiet prayer but also for families to come together in faith during their weekend routines.

“Sunday is still sacred for many Filipino families,” shares Imelda Elido, Executive Director of FTSFI. “Through our mall chapels, we give families the opportunity to weave faith into their everyday lives.”

But the foundation’s mission goes far beyond malls. FTSFI has taken on the preservation and rehabilitation of numerous Catholic churches and chapels across the Philippines. From San Pedro Calungsod Church in Cebu to the Mary the Queen Chapels in Jaro and Tacloban, the foundation helps restore and improve these spaces—enhancing safety, comfort, and sacred beauty for generations to come.

FTSFI also supports institutions like the John Mary Vianney Center for Priests, recognizing the need to care for those who dedicate their lives to spiritual service. The goal is clear: to maintain the presence of sacred spaces in both urban and rural landscapes, reinforcing the connection between faith, family, and community.

In addition to the mall chapels, the foundation has consistently supported the maintenance and restoration of churches in various locations, including the Shrine of Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life at the MOA Complex in Pasay City.

As Elido reflects, “Churches and chapels are more than buildings—they’re homes for spiritual growth, community healing, and family unity.” With initiatives like Kasalan sa SM, the foundation blends tradition with accessibility, ensuring that Filipino Catholics continue to find spaces where faith is nurtured and celebrated.
