Water scarcity is a growing global concern as urbanization and population growth put immense pressure on freshwater resources. The United Nations (UN)-Water highlights the need for effective water management to sustain both society and the environment. Addressing this issue requires proactive measures to conserve and efficiently utilize water.
Recognizing this challenge early on, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) has been at the forefront of sustainable water management since the 1990s. As a leading property developer in Southeast Asia, SM Prime has long understood the importance of responsible water usage, integrating conservation efforts into its projects even before water stress became a widely recognized crisis.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, SM Prime launched the Water for Tomorrow campaign, a dedicated effort to promote water stewardship across its developments. Through this initiative, the company ensures that climate resilience and efficient resource management remain key priorities, benefiting both the environment and the communities it serves.
Innovations in Water Conservation
SM Prime has embedded sustainable water practices into the core of its building operations. Investing heavily in modern water management technologies, the company actively reduces freshwater consumption and minimizes reliance on municipal water supplies. Through innovations in water recycling and conservation, SM Prime tackles the growing issue of water security.

By 2023, the company’s total water consumption reached 7.2 million cubic meters, with an impressive 61% of that volume being recycled. Across SM Supermalls, over 1 billion gallons of recycled water are used annually for essential functions such as cleaning, sanitation, plant care, and cooling air conditioning systems. Low-flow fixtures and efficient plumbing systems further regulate water use, reducing unnecessary waste.
SM Prime extends these practices beyond its malls. The E-Com Centers at the Mall of Asia Complex feature sewage treatment plants that recycle greywater, while rainwater harvesting systems help maintain green spaces within residential properties. At SMDC’s Sea and Shore Residences, treated wastewater is donated to support the MOA Complex’s landscaping efforts, demonstrating a circular approach to water use.

Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism
Water conservation is also a priority in SM Prime’s hospitality ventures. The Pico Sands Hotel and Pico de Loro Beach and Country Club have successfully reduced freshwater consumption by 36%, achieving a 52% water reuse rate. Meanwhile, SM Hotels and Convention Corporation continues to implement sustainable practices to further enhance water efficiency.
A significant milestone in SM Prime’s water sustainability efforts is the desalination plant at Hamilo Coast in Batangas. Operational since 2010, this facility provides a steady supply of potable water for luxury residential and leisure developments in the area. By harnessing desalination technology, SM Prime ensures long-term water security for its coastal communities while promoting eco-friendly tourism.

Advocating for Water Resource Protection
Beyond conservation, SM Prime actively supports global water preservation efforts. In line with the UN-Water World Water Day 2025 theme, “Glacier Preservation,” the company recognizes the vital role glaciers play in maintaining the Earth’s freshwater supply. With glaciers melting at an alarming rate due to climate change, the world faces increased risks of droughts, altered rainfall patterns, and rising sea levels.
Understanding these global challenges, SM Prime remains committed to integrating water-efficient systems across its properties. By encouraging responsible water use among its stakeholders—tenants, employees, mallgoers, and communities—the company fosters a culture of sustainability.
A notable example of this commitment is the rainwater treatment facility (RTF) at SM City Baguio, launched in 2023. This facility has already treated 17,000 cubic meters of rainwater into potable water, reducing reliance on traditional freshwater sources and directly benefiting the surrounding community.
Securing Water for the Future
The Water for Tomorrow campaign is a crucial pillar of SM Prime’s broader sustainability strategy, alongside its Net Zero by 2040 and Waste-Free Future initiatives. These interconnected programs underscore the company’s long-term vision of environmental responsibility.
“As businesses face growing water challenges, we must take action to secure our Water for Tomorrow,” said Hans T. Sy, SM Prime Executive Committee Chairman. His statement reinforces the urgency of proactive water management to ensure a sustainable future.
“Water stewardship is an investment in our future. We must move beyond conservation and prioritize resource protection, waste reduction, and water security for future generations,” he added. With SM Prime’s ongoing efforts, the company is paving the way for a more sustainable and water-secure tomorrow.
