As climate change accelerates and energy resources become increasingly strained, the shift toward renewable energy has never been more critical. Large commercial establishments, particularly malls, are in a unique position to lead this transformation. By adopting sustainable energy solutions, they can significantly reduce their environmental footprint while promoting long-term energy efficiency.
Recognizing this responsibility, SM Supermalls has taken bold strides toward sustainability, focusing on renewable energy solutions that lessen its reliance on fossil fuels. At the heart of this commitment is solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, which converts sunlight into electricity—offering a clean, cost-effective, and renewable energy source for its properties nationwide.

Scaling Up Solar Energy Across SM Malls
As of February 2025, SM has integrated solar PV systems into 45 of its malls across the Philippines, with additional properties slated for retrofitting. These solar installations not only reduce operational costs but also contribute to national sustainability efforts. SM’s growing solar portfolio aligns with its broader vision of minimizing carbon emissions and advancing clean energy use in commercial developments.
This commitment to sustainability has earned SM local and international recognition. SM Mall of Asia, for example, was honored at the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards by the Department of Energy (DOE) for its 2.7-megawatt solar PV system—enough to power nearly 1,800 homes for an entire year. Meanwhile, SM City Butuan received an ASEAN Energy Award for its leadership in energy-efficient building design and operations.

Driving the Philippines’ Renewable Energy Transition
SM’s solar initiatives align with the DOE’s Renewable Energy Roadmap 2017-2040, which aims to boost the country’s installed renewable energy capacity to 20,000 megawatts (MW) by 2040. By embracing solar power, SM not only reduces its environmental impact but also supports the government’s ambitious green energy transition.
To achieve these goals, SM partners with solar PV system providers under the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Distributed Energy Resources program. This collaboration ensures efficient project execution, clear operational guidelines, and adherence to national energy policies.
“At SM, sustainability is a long-term commitment. Our expanding solar portfolio reflects our dedication to a greener Philippines, in partnership with the DOE and industry leaders,” said SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance Group Engr. Liza Silerio.
A Model for Sustainable Development
Beyond its operational benefits, SM’s solar energy adoption serves as a blueprint for public-private partnerships (PPPs) in sustainability. By working closely with the DOE, SM leverages technical expertise, financial incentives, and policy support while driving job creation, innovation, and energy resilience. DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara emphasized the importance of collaboration in her speech at the Sustainable Energy Awards, stating:
“The DOE remains committed to sustainable energy development, and we appreciate the strong support from both the private and public sectors.” Through continued investment in renewable energy, SM is not just reducing costs—it is actively shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Philippines.
