SM Prime: Leading the Way in Flood Resilience and Sustainable Development

As a trailblazer in sustainability, SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime) continues to redefine environmental stewardship and disaster risk management in the Philippines. With a long history of innovative practices, including water recycling, renewable energy, and waste management, SM Prime has solidified its role as a leader in resilient infrastructure.

SM City Marikina, elevated on 246 concrete stilts, allows floodwaters to flow beneath, keeping occupants safe during severe weather events.

This commitment was further emphasized at the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, where Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee, highlighted the need for resilience and multi-sectoral collaboration to safeguard urban populations against climate challenges.

SM City Cabanatuan’s lower ground parking level doubles as a temporary flood catchment basin, a crucial element of our flood mitigation strategy.

Operating in a country highly susceptible to typhoons and flooding, SM Prime uses advanced hydrological surveys to ensure its properties are built to withstand the elements. A standout example is SM City Marikina, constructed on 246 concrete stilts near the flood-prone Marikina River.

Built to protect, SM City Masinag incorporates a rainwater catchment basin to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall.

This innovative design allows floodwaters to flow beneath the structure, as demonstrated during Typhoon Ondoy in 2009, when the mall remained unscathed and served as a refuge for affected residents. Similarly, SM City Cabanatuan features a parking area designed to temporarily hold floodwaters, further illustrating SM Prime’s commitment to resilient architecture.

SM City Masinag’s rainwater catchment basin collected 8,652.60 cubic meters of rainwater during Super Typhoon Carina.

Central to SM Prime’s flood mitigation strategy are its rainwater catchment basins, massive underground tanks that collect and store rainwater to prevent flooding.

With a combined capacity of 85,400 cubic meters across 29 malls, these basins have proven critical during severe weather events. For instance, during Super Typhoon Carina in 2024, SM City Masinag’s catchment basin collected over 8,600 cubic meters of rainwater, protecting nearby communities like Vermont Park Executive Village. Residents, like Gareth Aboy, praised the mall for its unwavering support, noting how it provided essential services, elevated parking, and flood management during crises.

Designed with the community in mind, SM City Masinag incorporates flood mitigation measures for safety.

SM Prime’s investments in sustainability and resilience not only protect communities but also enhance business continuity, underscoring the company’s belief that these efforts are invaluable. Through innovative infrastructure and a steadfast commitment to environmental protection, SM Prime continues to build a safer, more sustainable future for the communities it serves.
