SM Prime and DENR Unite for Clean Air Action

Memorandum of Agreement Signing (L-R): Engr. Orliber Paule, Senior Assistant Vice President, SM Estates; Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance Group, SM Supermalls; Engr. Maira Dorica Naz-Hipe, Regional Director, Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau – National Capital Region (DENR-EMB – NCR); Engr. Jessel Kabigting, SVP, SM Estates; and Atty. Linel Manayang, Officer-In-Charge (OIC), Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division, DENR-EMB-NCR

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SMPH) has partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to advance air quality monitoring in support of the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 (RA 8749). This collaboration underscores SMPH’s commitment to environmental stewardship by enhancing efforts to assess and address air pollution levels through advanced technology.

The initiative is part of the DENR’s Adopt-a-Continuous Ambient Air Monitoring System (CAMS) program, led by the Environmental Management Bureau – National Capital Region (EMB-NCR). Under a five-year Memorandum of Agreement signed during DENR’s Airshed Governing Board Year-End Meeting on November 26, SMPH has donated a CAMS unit valued at ₱7 million. The equipment, installed on SMPH property in Quezon City, will provide real-time air quality data to aid pollution management.

Stationed along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, the Air Quality Monitoring Equipment (AQME) provides real-time data on particulate matter present in the air.

SM Supermalls Vice President and Sustainability and Resilience Lead, Engr. Liza Silerio, highlighted the critical role of clean air initiatives:

“There is a need for programs like this to raise awareness about public health and enable data-driven solutions for cleaner air. Partnering with DENR allows us to contribute meaningfully to building healthier and more sustainable communities.”

The CAMS unit will provide real-time data, empowering local authorities and communities to understand pollution trends, identify sources, and implement solutions. SMPH’s contribution reflects the private sector’s growing role in addressing environmental challenges.
